Xbee adapter connection issue

Hey, I recently bought an Xbee adapter and can't seem to get a response from the Tera Term program I downloaded for it. I've been following instructions from the book "Building Wireless Sensor Networks." After a few setting changes you are suppose to type in "+++" and you will get an "OK" response, but after typing in the three pluses, I get nothing at all (red led on the adapter is on, and the green led is lightly flashing). I've followed the book exactly and various websites say the same thing, I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Please help!!

Do you configure the xbee parameters correct in the X-CTU? Please visit this page on how to use X-CTU and setup a zigbee network.
